Andrew and I visited Ojai for the first time last week. We had both heard of Ojai but didn’t really know much about it before our visit. We were pleasantly surprised by the charming town located in the beautiful Topatopa Mountains, about 90 minutes northwest of Los Angeles. The small city has a downtown area lined with art galleries, wonderful restaurants and charming wine-tasting rooms. There are no chain restaurants allowed (not even a Starbucks) which adds to the small-town charm. The surrounding area offers plenty of outdoor activities including hiking, horse-back riding and golf.

There is a good selection of hotels/motels, but if you’re looking for a unique place to rest your head, I highly suggest you book a stay at Caravan Outpost. Located just south of downtown, Caravan Outpost is close enough to walk or bike to the main part of town, yet its oasis-like enclosure of palm trees and lush landscaping makes you feel a world away.

The resort consists of 10 Airstream trailers plus 1 larger caravan named Julian, which we stayed in. Each caravan is equipped with a kitchenette, bathroom, sitting/dining area and a record player. If you are looking for a little extra space, Julian is the way to go, with it’s full size bathroom, loft and spacious living area.

The common area is lined with wood picnic tables and offers games like corn hole and ladder golf. There are also bikes that you can use freely. My favorite part was the nightly campfire where you can gather around to cook a meal, enjoy a cocktail or roast a marshmallow while chatting with fellow glampers.

Caravan Outpost provides the fun of camping, without all the hassle. It’s the perfect destination if you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and relax in the midst of nature. We had the best time and can’t wait to plan a trip back!
